RECYCLING MAKES MORE SENSE THAN EVER.
You'd have a hard time finding a reason why NOT to recycle bottles and cans. After all, if you throw them away, it's a waste of natural resources, a waste of energy and a waste of money. An aluminum can, for example, can sit in a landfill taking decades to decompose, or it can be recycled and be back on the shelf in about 90 days, thereby:

  • Reducing the need for virgin bauxite ore
  • Saving enough energy to run a television for almost three hours

Putting cash in the pocket of the person who took it to the recycling center

WHAT TO RECYCLE
Almost every bottle and can has the chance for a new life. In California, most of them are also good for cash when you redeem them. If you have any container from the following list, you're set.

  • Carbonated Soft Drinks        what :: recyclable aluminum can         what :: recyclable glass bottle          what :: recyclable plastic bottle
  • Wine Coolers
  • Distilled Spirit Coolers
  • Beer
  • Carbonated and Mineral Water
  • Non-carbonated Water
  • Sports Drinks
  • Coffee and Tea Drinks
  • Fruit Drinks
  • Fruit Juices packed in containers less than 46 oz.
  • Vegetable juice in containers 16 ounces or less

CRV: It Stands For Money.
Every time you buy one of the above, you pay CRV. That stands for California Refund Value. When you recycle the container, CRV can do one of two things:

1.       Go back into your pocket. (Return your containers to a Recycling Center and you'll get your money back.)

2.       Help pay for recycling. Drop your containers in a recycling bin or put them out for curbside pick-up, and whoever cleans them up gets the money.

There's money in those bottles and cans.
You can get more than your favorite beverage from these containers. You can also get cash. Thanks to the California Refund Value (CRV), you can return your glass, plastic and aluminum containers for money.

How much can you get for a bottle or can?

  • 4¢ for containers less than 24 ounces
  • 8¢ for containers 24 ounces and larger

As a matter of convenience and efficiency, most recycling centers pay by the pound if you bring in a large load, so be sure to have only CRV containers to get the highest possible refund. You also can request to be paid on a per-container basis if you bring in loads of fewer than 50 per material type you just have to ask the recycler to pay by count instead of by weight.

What beverages have CRV?

  • Beer and Malt Beverages
  • Wine Coolers and Distilled Spirit Coolers
  • Carbonated Fruit Drinks
  • Noncarbonated Fruit Drinks containing any percentage of fruit juice
  • Water (carbonated and non-carbonated)
  • Coffee and Tea drinks
  • Sports drinks
  • Energy drinks

Containers eligible for CRV will have CA Cash Refund, CA Redemption Value or similar wording on the label.
What beverages don't have CRV?

  • Milk
  • Medical Food
  • Nutritional Supplements
  • Infant Formula
  • Wine
  • 100% fruit Juice in containers 46 ounces or more
  • Vegetable Juice in containers larger than 16 ounces
